1. What are the benefits of becoming a member of Phi Sigma Theta?
Phi Sigma Theta is a National Honor Society dedicated to recognizing and rewarding academic achievement in undergraduates at institutions of higher learning. PST also encourages its members to participate in community service, to take advantage of leadership opportunities, and to continue to excel scholastically. Your membership includes:

  • Professionally Designed Certificate of Membership
  • Post Graduate Scholarships and various other awards
  • The Recognition of being a Member of an Honorary Student Organization
  • Membership Traditional Key or Lapel Pin
  • Single Lifetime Membership Fee
  • Press Release Request Form
  • Letters of Reference for Admission to Grad School or Career Placement
  • Commencement Honor Cords available at graduation (back to top)
2. Why did I receive an invitation letter?
You received an invitation letter because you have met the academic requirements for membership, and your university provided the local Phi Sigma Theta chapter with your name and address. You can contact the registrar’s office if you do not wish to have your name and address available to similar registered student organizations. (back to top)

3. Why did I receive an invitation letter if I am already a member?
Phi Sigma Theta tries to avoid this situation. However, this is not always possible because of the differences in university processing methods and timing. Also, methods we use to cross reference existing members' contact information to new eligible members are not always 100% accurate. If you receive an invitation and are already a member, please forgive us. (back to top)

4. How much time does membership require?
There is no minimum participation requirement to maintain your membership in Phi Sigma Theta. However, Phi Sigma Theta strongly encourages its members to participate in the organization as much as possible, and become an active member in Phi Sigma Theta and any local activities with which Phi Sigma Theta is involved. Nationally, Phi Sigma Theta is involved in mentoring and community service programs and encourages its members to become involved locally. (back to top)

5. If I transfer to another university what happens with my membership?
Membership in Phi Sigma Theta is for a lifetime regardless of where your academic path may lead. You can provide Phi Sigma Theta with your new university information and we can update our records, and re-issue a new certificate if requested. Also, it might become a good opportunity for you as well. You could, if you choose, establish another chapter of Phi Sigma Theta at your new school if Phi Sigma Theta is not already currently active on campus. (back to top)

6. What if I received an invitation some time in the past, and now I want to accept?
Invitation for membership into Phi Sigma Theta does not expire. If you still have your invitation form just fill it out and mail it in per the instructions. If you no longer have your invitation, please contact us and let us know your name, university, and when we sent the invitation to you. We will confirm your invitation and resend it to you. (back to top)

7. How is the initiation fee used?
The initiation fees cover scholarships and awards, the costs of various membership materials including; pins, keys, certificates, and letters of recommendation. Fees also support local community projects through the local Phi Sigma Theta chapter, the costs of establishing new chapters throughout the country and other administrative functions.
